From Academic Leadership to Independent Documentary Filmmaking

Åsne Høgetveit (b. 1985) is the latest addition to Koko Film, Tromsø, Norway. In 2019, Åsne earned her PhD in Russian Cinema from UiT The Arctic University of Norway and subsequently continued her career at her alma mater. Initially, she worked at the University Library as a Senior Academic Librarian, and in 2022, she was appointed Head of the Department of Archaeology, History, Religious Studies, and Theology.

Despite her academic achievements, in 2023 she embraced a new challenge in the world of documentary filmmaking, inspired by Trude Ottersen. Åsne realized early on that inheriting the family farm was unlikely, prompting her to pursue a different path. What was the alternative? Independent documentary filmmaking. Jokes aside, Åsne's primary motivation is her curiosity, especially in exploring how narratives are constructed and contested. This curiosity led her to academia, but she is now eager to apply her passion for compelling storytelling to the world of documentary filmmaking.

About her project: The Warriors & The Swan

In parallel with the birth and upbringing of her three children, López Rubio has been closely following the Assange case for nine years and directed the documentary Hacking Justice (first version 2017, updated version 2021) which is broadcast on public television channels WDR, 3Sat, ARD (Germany), Canal Sur and Canal Historia (Spain - under the title Garzón Assange: el juez y el rebelde), RTS (Switzerland) and VRT (Belgium).

The film was released in cinemas in France in November 2021 (distributed by Les Mutins de Pangèe). The impact campaign includes a screening in Geneva at the United Nations, a screening at the French National Assembly as part of the initiative by French parliamentarians to grant political asylum to Julian Assange (2021) and a screening at the Farnese cinema in Rome sponsored by Oscar nominated producer Elda Ferri (2023).

Hacking Justice participates in numerous festivals and receives the following awards: Special Jury Mention at DocsMx (Mexico, 2017), Best Documentary at the International Filmfestival of the Caribbean Sea (Venezuela, 2018), Special Jury Mention at San Antonio del Estero (Argentina, 2018) and Special Jury Mention at ATLANTICDOC (Uruguay, 2021).

My Story

In 2018 and 2019, López Rubio was part of the Official Jury at the international film festivals FICIP and SEFF (Argentina). In 2022, she participated in the Documentary Campus development program with her feature-length documentary project Amazonas, about Waorani women in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In 2023, Amazonas received the Gerd Ruge Stipendium development grant for authors (NRW Stiftung, Germany), received a 1&1 mentoring from CIMA, and participated in the Doklab Navarra program funded by the ICAA and NextGenerationEU (European Union). Now she takes part in Circle Women Doc Accelerator 2024.

She is also a film historian. Her publications include the book Fliegerträume und Spanische Erde on the cinema of the Spanish Civil War (Editorial Schüren, Germany, 2010) and Julian Assange: le combat du siecle pour la liberté dínformer (Les Mutins de Pangèe, 2021) with the participation of the philosopher Noam Chomsky and the United Nations special rapporteur Nils Melzer.
